Three days off, and Durham filled them up.
Rotary Park Pool is open. 🏊🏽♂️ Seven years and $25 million later, it's done: zero-entry pool, toddler splash, destination playground, free leisure swims all summer for Oshawa residents.
Tonight in Ajax, an Emancipation Day evening starts at 7:30, and at 10pm a free bus heads for Union Station. 🚂 At midnight, when August 1 arrives, the people on that subway car will be marking the exact minute freedom became law. It's the best thing happening in Durham this weekend. Full details below, and if you're reading this over coffee, registration is same-day.
Out in Beaverton, the sunflowers are in. 🌻 Vendor market Saturday and Sunday, line dancing in the field tonight. The dancing needs tickets in advance and it sells out.

🌻 The sunflowers are up, Beaverton — Brock
The Sunflower Farm's fields are in bloom 🌻 and the season is on. Vendor market this Saturday and Sunday, line dancing tonight. They only run two market weekends a year, and both sell.
💧 Bowmanville Creek gets some breathing room — Clarington
The Province awarded Clarington $509,118 for a stormwater project on Hetherington Drive, protecting Bowmanville Creek from erosion and runoff. Work broke ground mid-July, and the Bowmanville Valley Trail stays open throughout.
🏠 104 homes where people need them most — Whitby
The Region approved Phase 2 at 1635 Dundas St. E.: 104 supportive units, backed by more than $40M in federal and regional funding, with addictions recovery support, an on-site medical clinic, and palliative care beds for people experiencing homelessness.
🏗️ Pickering built more homes than the Province asked for
Pickering broke ground on 1,477 homes in 2025, 14% above its provincial target. The reward: $4,410,987 from the Building Faster Fund, going straight back into the infrastructure that makes more housing possible.
🏊 The pool is finally open — Oshawa
Seven years after the rebuild began, Rotary Park Pool is open. Four-lane lap pool, zero-entry leisure pool, toddler splash pool, destination playground. Oshawa residents swim free at leisure swims all summer, and learn-to-swim lessons are free too.
🎨 Art, memoir, and showing up — Scugog
Scugog Council for the Arts won a provincial Seniors Community Grant: memoir-writing workshops, digital literacy sessions, gallery artist talks and a craft club, running September through March.
🎡 2,000 free CNE passes — Ajax
The Town of Ajax secured 2,000 free Canadian National Exhibition passes for residents who need them, distributed through community partners. If you know a family who could use one, reach out to the Town.

⚡ Lightning hit the library. The library won. — Uxbridge
A bolt struck the historic clock tower on July 21. Staff walked the summer-camp kids over to Town Hall, set them up in council chambers, and kept the crafts going until parents arrived. The original Seth Thomas clock, 125 years old, survived intact. Doors reopened July 24.
🕊️ Emancipation Day
August 1, 1834. The Slavery Abolition Act took effect across the British Empire, Canada included. That was 192 years ago. Canada made Emancipation Day an official national day in 2021.
Before that date, people escaping slavery in the American South moved north through the Underground Railroad: a hidden network of routes, safe houses, and people willing to risk everything to help. The border was the destination. Reaching Canada meant reaching freedom, and most of that travelling happened at night.
That's what tonight's ride is about.
Friday July 31, 7:30pm — Ajax
The Durham Family Cultural Centre, the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering are hosting a community evening at the Ajax Community Centre: cultural programming, food, people together. At 10pm, a free bus leaves for Union Station.
You board the TTC at Union, ride the Yonge line northbound, and when the clock crosses into August 1, you're on that train. Toronto's Blackhurst Cultural Centre has run this midnight ride since 2013. This year they added a Durham hub, so nobody here has to sort out the drive.

Wednesday August 5, 3–8pm — Oshawa
Durham Region's official Emancipation Day celebration, now in its fifth year, at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park. This year's theme is "Forward Together: Freedom, Culture, Community." Sixty-plus vendors, an African fashion show, live drumming, spoken word, family activities. Free, drop in.
🎒 Operation Backpack — goal: 6,000 bags
Six Durham organizations making sure no student starts September empty-handed: Ignite Durham Learning Foundation, Simcoe Hall, United Way Durham Region, Durham Children's Aid Foundation, St. Andrew's Food Bank, and Durham Community Health Centre. Last year: 6,000+ backpacks out the door.

🚐 Free waterfront shuttle — Pickering, all long weekend
DRT Route 100 runs free every 20 minutes, noon to 9pm, weekends and statutory holidays through September 7, Monday August 3 included. Thursday evenings too, 7 to 9:30pm.
At midnight tonight, a subway car crosses from July into August with a few hundred people from Ajax riding it on purpose. That's Emancipation Day in Durham this year. Not a plaque, not a paragraph. Neighbours choosing to stand somewhere specific at the exact minute freedom became law, 192 years ago.
That kind of showing up wasn't only on the subway this week. Petrona McBean built the Caribbean grocery Durham didn't have. A library crew, lightning through the clock tower mid-summer-camp, packed up a room full of kids and kept the day going one building over.
No plan.
No permission.
They just did it.
That's the Durham way.
